Barunga Festival

When Culture and Sport Come Together
Held in June, the cultural festival is acknowledged nationally as a premiere celebration of culture and sport in the Top End and Katherine region. Over 20 communities from across the NT descend upon the community to show off their skills in contemporary and traditional sporting events such as Aussie rules, basketball, softball and athletics, spear throwing, fire lighting, didgeridoo competitions and demonstrations of traditional dance.

The Barunga community is one of the most accessible Aboriginal communities in the Top End, with sealed roads and good infrastructure to handle large crowds. Camping is allowed around the community for the duration of the festival at no charge, however a gold coin donation will be charged at the entrance to the community event. A diverse range of foods are available throughout the weekend.

  • A good range of quality food and beverage stalls will be available for your convenience
  • Well stocked general store at your service
  • Limited health and medical services will be available
  • Fuel available
  • BBQ cooking facilities available in camping grounds

The Barunga festival is a must on the touring calendar for visitors to the Top End. The Barunga community management board has declared the festival a NO alcohol event, no alcohol will be allowed into the community and no alcohol will be available for sale during the weekend.

Barunga welcomes all visitors to the community - no permits required.
