| Since European settlement there has been a massive increase in the population number of Jawoyn country. The major urban population in the area is Katherine township with a population of approximately 10,000. It is the fourth largest urban centre in the Northern Territory and services a large rural population providing extensive shopping and recreational facilities and having offices of most NT Government Departments. Mining and associated exploration, tourism, defence forces and pastoralism are the major industries in the area and provide significant employment and financial input to the region.
